Nile Kids Presents...
My Sudanese Eid
Hi, my name is Aya, and I live in Los Angeles, California. I am originally from Sudan, and I am a Muslim. Every year, my family fasts in the month of Ramadan (last year it was from November 16 to December 16), and my parents don't eat or drink all day! I tried to fast sometimes, but I don't have to. (hehehee) :-) After this month is over, we have a BIG 3-day holiday called "Eid-ul-Fitr", which means "The Holiday of Fast-Breaking", because the adults can now go back to normal, and eat and drink whenever they want.
When Eid is near, my mother starts baking DELICIOUS cookies. They're called "khabeez", and there are many kinds - some with jam, some with chocolate, but my FAVORITE is called "ka'ak", and its covered with white powdered sugar....yummmmmm! She makes alot of these cookies, and she buys alot of candy too.

Why do Muslims fast in Ramadan?

She and my father take us shopping before Eid for cool new clothes. My brother is so picky, it takes all day shopping with him! My mother buys stuff for the house like new "milayat" (bedsheets- I don't know WHY she buys so many!) and kitchen stuff. She buys a brand new colorful "tobe",and she also puts on "henna''- to decorate her hands and feet.

She is very happy when she has henna on. I like it when she is so happy. :-)
My father gets his Sudanese clothes ready- his
"jalabeeya", "'imma", and "markoob", which he wears on Eid day. He looks alot like my grandfather when he wears it!
On the morning of Eid, my mother wakes us up early, and we wear our brand new clothes, put on perfume, and open our PRESENTS !! That's the best part of Eid, cause our parents buy us great presents every year!
My mother burns some sweet-smelling "bakhoor" in the house, and it makes the whole house smell soo good. Then we go with my father to the Eid Prayer, where we meet all our friends, and everybody wishes each other a happy Eid by saying "Kullu Sana wu Intu Taybeen! Kullu 'AAm wu intu bikhair!!" and we all pray together. Thousands of people are there, all praying together.
After that, we come home and I help my mother with "Fatoor Al-Eid", Eid breakfast, which is really a brunch. My mom makes "3aseeda&Mulaah", "Shi'ayreeya", alot of meat, and alot of food. We call our family members in Sudan, and other places to wish them a happy Eid, our friends come and visit us, and we have a great time !!
