| Dear Jason, Hello. My name is Khalid, and I live in Khartoum. I am supposed to write this letter describing my life in Sudan. Let's see, where should I begin? There's so much to talk about. Well, I live with my mother, father, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, and grandmother. It's not crowded because our house is very big. We have two huge yards in the front and back of our house. They are called "hayshaan" (One is called a "hosh") , and we sleep in them, under the stars every night. I love my grandmother. She is so much fun! I love it when she tells me stories- I never get bored! My favorite food is called "mulaah robe", and my mother cooks is for us every Friday. That's the weekly holiday here, and all my cousins, aunts and uncles come to visit on that day. Friday is my favorite day! All the family gets together for the WHOLE DAY, I get to play with my cousins, and my grandmother picks a special SCARY story to tell us all (but I don't get scared). Khartoum is hot and we drink alot of water. Sometimes the power gets cut off, and that is a very bad time! We have 3 big "zeers" or big clay pots of water in our yards, which come in very handy when the power is off and we are thirsty. Well, that's enough I guess for this time. I hope to hear from you soon. I hope you learned something about the way I live. next time, I'll tell you about school! Sincerely, Your Sudanese Penpal Khalid |
