Kiret
the Goat

Once upon a time, there was a family of goats living in a village. They
were 6 sisters. The youngest was named “Kiret”.
Every day, the goats would go to the large meadow of green grass to
eat, and drink clean cool water from the river near the field. It was
beautiful there. They played and jumped around the large field in the
warm sun all day. But they would first take Kiret to the nearby water
hole that had some ugly grass growing around it. She wanted to go with
them, and eat the nice grass and drink the nice water, but they
wouldn’t let her. They said she doesn’t listen to them and so they
cannot take her with them.
One day, Kiret asked her oldest sister, Mi’za Saniyya, if she could go
with them that day to the beautiful meadow. She begged her. Kiret said,
“Please, please let me go with you! I’ll be good, and I‘ll obey you and
listen to what you say! I just want to go to that nice place instead of
the ugly place where I eat and drink!”
Mi’za Saniyya said, “Kiret, you know why we never take you there?
Because everyday when the sun goes down, the wolf comes out to try and
eat us. That’s why we have to leave there everyday before the sun goes
down. If you go with us, when I call you to say it’s time to leave, you
will not listen, and the wolf will eat you up!”
Kiret said, “No, no! Please! I will listen to you! Please!!”
Mi’za Saniya saw how sad her sister was, and how she really wanted to
go. So she said, “Ok Kiret. I will trust you. I will believe you. When
we say it’s time to leave, you have to come right away, ok?” Kiret
said, “Ok!”
Kiret was very excited about going to the meadow for the first time.
That morning she was jumping around the house so happy and ready to go
with her sisters for the first time. They all left the house early in
the morning to go graze in the meadow. When they got there, Kiret
couldn’t believe her eyes! It was even more beautiful than she
imagined! The grass was so green and tall, the water was so clean and
cool. There were butterflies and flowers everywhere. She started
dancing and jumping and twirling around. She ate the delicious grass.
It was nothing like the grass she used to eat!
All day long, Kiret and her sisters played in the meadow happily. Then,
it was time to go. Mi’za Sanniya called to all her sisters. She said,
“Come on everybody! It’s time to go now!” All the goats came right
away, except- Kiret. Mi’za Sanniya called to her again, “Kiret, let’s
go home!” Kiret said, “No! Abet!” Abet means I won’t.
Mi’za Sanniya got very angry. She kept calling Kiret, and Kiret kept
saying “Abet!” It was almost sunset, and the wolf was almost coming
out. Mi’za Sanniya said to herself, “I have to teach Kiret a lesson”.
She went to the wolf, and asked him, “Mr. Wolf, can you come scare
Kiret?” The wolf said, “What did she do?” Mi’za Sanniya said, “She
wouldn’t go home. She said Abet!” The wolf was lazy and said, “I don’t
wanna go either. Abet!”
Mi’za Sanniya got angry and went to a dog. She said, “Mr. Dog, can you
chase the wolf?” The dog said, “What did he do?”
Mi’za Sanniya said, “He wouldn’t scare Kiret.” He said, “What did Kiret
do?” She said, “She wouldn’t go home. She said Abet.”
The dog was tired, and said, “I won’t do it either! Abet!”
So Mi’za Sanniya then went to a large stick. She said to him, “Mr.
Stick, can you hit the dogs?” The stick said, “What did they do?” She
said, “They wouldn’t chase the wolf.” He said, “What did the wolf do?”
She said, “He wouldn’t scare Kiret.” He said, “And what did Kiret do?”
Mi’za Sanniya said, “She wouldn’t go home. She said Abet.” The stick
said, “I won’t either. Abet!”
So Mi’za Sanniya went angrily to a burning fire. She said, “Mr. Fire,
can you burn the stick?” The fire said, “What did he do?” She said, “He
won’t hit the dog.” He said, “What did the dog do?” She said, “He won’t
chase the wolf.” He said, “What did the wolf do?” She said, “He won’t
scare Kiret.” He said, “And what did Kiret do?” She said, “She wouldn’t
go home. She said Abet.” The fire said, “I won’t either. Abet!”
Then, she went to a bucket of water. She said, “Mr. Water, can you go
put out the fire?” The water said, “What did he do?” She said, “He
won’t burn the stick.” He said, “What did the stick do?” She said, “He
won’t hit the dog.” He said, “What did the dog do?” She said, “He won’t
chase the wolf.” He said, “What did the wolf do?” She said, “He won’t
scare Kiret.” He said, “And what did Kiret do?” She said, “She won’t go
home. She said Abet.” The water was tired, and said, “I won’t either.
Abet!”
Mi’za Sanniya was very very angry now! She said to the water, “If you
won’t I will drink you all up!” The water was very scared, and said,
“No, no! Ok, I will go put out the fire!”
The water ran to the fire. The fire saw him coming and ran to the
stick. The stick saw the fire coming and ran to the dog. The dog saw
the stick coming and ran to the wolf. The wolf saw the dog coming and
ran to Kiret. Kiret saw the wolf coming and ran all the way home. She
said she will always listen to her big sister from now on.
